Writing 101: Day 17 – Take a Deep Breath

I am sleeping peacefully on the bed, lost in a dream. But slowly I start to come to my senses. There is movement alongside me, and people are murmuring all around. These people! They won’t let a bloke sleep. I don’t want to open my eyes lest they think I have woken up. They won’t let me cuddle back to sleep for sure. Suddenly, I sense something different. It feels like I am floating in the air. What is happening? Maybe it’s my brain playing tricks. The murmuring has stopped now, I decide I can safely open my eyes. But when I do, I find something coming towards me. I can’t quickly place it, but below it I can see grass and a lot of legs.

I realize that whatever that was, it’s not coming but closing on me! I quickly look around. I’m in a fucking coffin. I try to yell, but nothing comes out of my mouth. The lid closes and everything turns dark as I grapple for breath. My mind goes numb while I start to die a suffocating death…

If you’ve made it this far, then congrats, you now know what my biggest fear is.

It’s not the fear of dying, it’s the fear of being stuck in extremely confined spaces. A version of Claustrophobia, if you will. I’m fine with being in elevators and all. As long as I can move inside the space, I don’t have a problem. (I’m not like Robert Langdon, you see) But being stuck in places where I can’t move, can’t see, and probably can’t help myself out – that is what gives me the chills. I still get goosebumps whenever I imagine myself in such places. In reality, this never happened to me and probably never will but I don’t know why it affects me so much.

By the way, the account you read above of me stuck inside a coffin was an actual nightmare I had. I was jittery the whole day.

And if you have to know, I also have Entomophobia. The tiny devils!

  1. Wow I can only imagine how terrifying that nightmare must have been! I suffer from a different phobia to you, but it is quite severe, so I can imagine how difficult it must be for you to be faced with tight environments. Hope by writing about it you can feel a bit better though.

    • Thanks for stopping by! Yes, it had been pretty scary and still haunts me to this day. Luckily, I’ve never had the chance to be stuck in such tight places till now but it’s anyone guess what’ll happen to me if I do 🙂

And yes, feels good to finally let it out of my system!

  2. Nice post! Your recall of the dream was effective in drawing me in as a reader. Tight spaces is certainly a uncomfortable fear I share with you. Get this: as a kid I hated turtle necks b/c I didn’t like the sensation I got when I pulled it over my head and the ‘neck’ sucked tight against my face. I literally felt panic every time I got to that part, as if I was going to suffocate. Lol, sounds so silly now but boy can I remember the realness of it. So I’m like you in that I can handle small spaces but I don’t like being trapped by any means and will panic on your a** in a heart beat.

Quick editing remark btw, I think the last sentence of the first paragraph is a little bit awkward. 🙂

  3. Such a scene or situation, I would not even imagine to come into my dreams. Oh!! Horrors!!! Woh!!!! Woh!!!!! Hee!!!!!! Hee!!!!!!! I will be lost.
The more you think of them, they come closer to you, so better be away. The best thing one can do is, before one gets frightened, frighten them at their buds. I feel that is the Formula one can adopt.

    • Lol, I thought my fears were pretty trivial when I read some of the others!!

I guess trivial or not, a fear is a fear so it’s better to write about it and be relieved! 🙂

    • Well I do try to avoid as much as possible. Especially here in Chennai, boarding a crowded bus is like stepping into hell, literally. :/ A lot of things add up apart from the suffocation, but my tolerance seems to be increasing day by day too!

  4. Whoa, yeah I can see why this would be scary. Hope this fear disappates after a while, I mean after all it is the things that are less likely to happen that happen to be the most scary. Good post once again, I’ve gone in a different order in reading your posts, haha 🙂
